Cryogenic Safe Handling of Cryogenics

Cryogenic fluids can cause severe burns. It is important to thoroughly read and understand all of the safety and maintenance sections of your product manual. Exposure to cryogenic liquid or low temperature gas can result in injury including severe skin burns and tissue damage. Be sure to follow all safety precautions and always wear proper safety equipment to protect body, hands, and face. Prior to performing any work on a container, be sure to completely remove all liquid and vent pressure. Be certain that parts, hands, tools and work area are clean and free from dirt, oil and grease. For liquid cylinders, all parts exposed to product must be cleaned for oxygen service.

Oxygen - Dangers of Hydrocarbon

The main concern in an Oxygen application is not the high pressures used or the gas itself. It is the potential, dangerous mixture of pure Oxygen with a readily oxidizable substance, such as a hydrocarbon which can lead to an explosion. Always keep in mind to use only compatible Krytox® Oil and Grease for your application. Many synthetic lubricants show excellent performance in one or more categories, but only Krytox® combines stability, non-flammability, and chemical inertness with outstanding lubrication performance under a variety of conditions. Safe Handling of Cylinders

Before Moving or Transporting Gas Cylinders
» Always wear personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses and safety shoes).
» Read the product label to confirm that you have the proper product and to identify the related hazards before loading the cylinder into your vehicle.
» Ensure that the cylinder valve is fully closed and the protection cap (where applicable) is secured in place.
» DO NOT SMOKE when handling or transporting these products.
While Moving Full or Empty Cylinders
» Always use carts or hand trucks designed for this purpose.
» Never drop cylinders or allow them to strike each other violently.
» Never lift cylinders by the cap or with a lifting magnet.
Safe Storage Practices
» Store cylinders upright in compact groups, interlocking them so that each cylinder physically contacts those around it. Single cylinders should be secured in place using stands, clamps, a cylinder cart or other securing devices.
» Keep stored cylinders out of high traffic areas or in areas where there are activities that could damage or contaminate the cylinders.
» Electric arc welding can destroy the integrity of cylinder metal if a welder carelessly strikes an arc on a cylinder.
» Never store cylinders with flammable materials.
